WFMW Backwards Edition - Book Recommendations for Young Boys

My Works for Me Wednesday - Backwards Edition question is what are some good books for young boys. My son is almost 6.

We just finished all our Dan Frontier books (about frontiersman, Indians, soldiers etc) - that is the kind of stuff my son loves.

So I'm looking for another very boyish series of books that he will want to keep reading. They need to be simple enough for him to read on his own - but more than just a couple of sentences on each page.

Any ideas??

Does your son enjoy sports? Dan Gutman writes some great books- Mickey and Me, Babe and Me, Jackie and Me. He also writes some that are not about sports. Both my sons love his books. Also, The Magic Tree House books by Mary Pope Osborne.

Good luck- and great job getting him reading!!!

My son LOVES Captain Underpants, for fun reading (and lots of giggling). He also loves any Star Wars series book (there are a gazillion, and you can find them used all over the internet).

Magic Tree House is also a good series and Andrew Lost.

Magic Tree House. When he's a little older, A to Z Mysteries are good. My son also likes the Bionicles and Junie B. Jones books.

My favorite (and my brother's) books when I was little were the Mouse and the Motorcycle series and the Indian in the Cupboard series. They are both very boyish and appropriate for young kids.

I recommend the "Dangerous Book for Boys" kinda like a Boy Scout handbook.

The My Father's Dragon series (I think it has three books). He'll love it!

When I was little, I read a series of old books that my dad had from his childhood called the Sugar Creek Gang. They're old, but they're fun, adventurous, and Christian. Probably appropriate for an 8-year-old to read alone, a 6-year-old might need a little bit of help. know if you might be able to find them at a library?

Magic Treehouse books and the Boxcar Children series! Both great! Thanks for visiting my site today and giving places to go in KC! I appreciate it! Can't wait to try the barbeque!

I posted a very similar question. My little guy is 5 1/2. Everyone gave some great comments, so feel free to head over and check them out:

You may know this already, but there are other Dan Frontier-type books. Have you checked out http://www.abcbooksbyann.com/beneficpress ?

The Billy and Blaze books by C.W. Anderson are good. Your son might also enjoy some great picture books -- Lentil (and others, esp. Homer Price) by McCloskey, the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie books by Numeroff, and The Squire and the Scroll by Jennie Bishop shouldn't be missed.

As he gets older, a wonderful resource for incredible books is www.amblesideonline.com .

Oops. The Ambleside addy is amblesideonline.org, but the .com will get you there, too.

Sorry for the Mommy Brain moment.

"Time Warp Trio" by Jon Skiezka (I think that is the spelling.) They are like "The Magic Tree House", but more masculine.

There's a series of books called "Ready Freddy." They are usually available through Scholastic. Also, see if your little guy is into any non-fiction books. The vocab might be a bit high, but there are some great beginning science readers out there, too!

Thanks for knowing exactly when to tell me what I want to hear, when I want to hear it the most.

Amazing amount of great, actionable advice. I will keep coming back to this for a while to try and implement many of these! Thanks!
