Sugar Palm Fruit - Kaong

Sugar Palm Fruit or Kaong - is the fruit of a sugar palm tree, and comes from the Philippines.

The fruits were little and white and egg-shaped, almost transparent.

The kids and I did not like it. It tasted super sweet, was chewy and had a bubblegummish / banana flavor. After tasting, we noticed that artificial banana flavoring was one of the ingredients. Artificial banana flavoring, never tastes good.

Dd's opinion, "too chewy and weird", ds's opinion, "tastes sweet and chewy...too banana-ful (he hates bananas - except the dried variety...and sister hates the dried variety and loves them fresh and greenish).

I guess you could think of them as the white equivalent of maraschino cherries...I love maraschino cherries - but eating them straight out of the jar isn't all that great. But, once you mix the cherries into some yummy dessert like this, or add it to a hot fudge sundae, or add it to some homemade Cherry Coke - I can't stop eating them!

I tell my husband there is such a thing as too sweet, but he heartily disagrees. Maybe I should hand him some of these!

What an intresting and fun blog! Where you do you buy all your exotic foods?

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Most of the exotic foods we find come from a grocery store that specializes in foods from around the globe.

We actually just stumbled upon it one day, driving around in an area we don't normally frequent. It sounded interesting, so we went in.

Some larger regular grocery stores also have begun carrying more "exotic" fruits and vegetables and foods, especially areas with a high concentration of certain ethnic groups.

Also, within about a 5 min drive from our home there are about 3 or 4 Mexican markets and one Middle East market.

I would have tried the creamed rice, but I don't think I would have tried the sugar palm fruit. No go on the fake banana.

I noticed you were an ex-Canadian... my hubby and I spent our first five years of married life in Canada. Talking of Canada always makes me miss Smarties, good donuts, poutine and Coffee Crisp. Nothing terribly adventurous, but yummy!

FYI: Sugar Palm fruit is not eaten by itself because it is too sweet. You have to drain it first before mixing it to your fruit salad or Halo-halo (shaved ice dessert).

Another one that you will enjoy is the coconut gel. The same thing, you have to drain it before mixing it to your fruit salad or Halo-halo (shaved ice dessert).

We personally recommend the white Kaong because it does not have any artificial coloring on it.

Enjoy!

kaong, nata de coco, jackfruit, beans or anything sweetened and canned, have to be drained first before using.

@Anonymous - Yes, but for some bottled kaong and nata de coco adding the syrup will do if the product is not too sweet.

Hi Edi,

The article was good. But I am really disappointed to hear that you and kids did not like sugar palm fruits. Well, I think it might be because it was canned and came preserved in sugar syrup or sumthing and had that fake banana flavor you mentioned. Let me tell you, the fresh sugar palm fruit is just so yummy. In India, especially in Kerala and Tamil Nadu(2 sates of southern India) we get that a lot, really fresh and it tastes great. I think you and kids would love them fresh from the palm tree. If you ever come to south India please do not forget to try them. You will have a whole new experience to share in your next article.
