Cacahuate Japones a.k.a. Japanese Peanuts

We found these little fellas at a Mexican grocery store.

They were over in the candy/snacks area...don't remember if the kids picked them out or if I did.

Japanese Peanuts? I thought maybe they were a variety of peanuts, rather than a regular old peanut coated with a shell that is flavored with soy sauce.

I tried looking for a recipe - thinking maybe you could make your own - but didn't find anything.

These peanuts have a hard shell - so it adds some crunch. The kids and I really liked them - and you can well imagine them being a bit addictive. They do have a salty flavor with a hint of sweetness and also some spicy hotness.

The ingredients on the package include: peanuts, wheat flour, rice flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, soy sauce and potato starch.

If you are wanting to give someone some homemade mixed nut or "nuts & bolts" party mixture - I think these would be a nice addition.

I have extensive tasting experience with these fellows and can vouch for their tastyness.

According to this website: http://www.easymexicanfood.com/japanese_peanuts.html they are the invention of a Japanese immigrant in Mexico, who knows if they have a few variation of these peanuts in Japan.

Personally I tend to like the kinds with chili in the crust, makes for more of an interesting flavor.

Where can I find them in Florida? I fell in love with them in a Mexico resort. I like the spicy ones also. Found sweet ones in Citrus county Florida at First Asian Store, but prefer spicy. E-mail me at sweetestkelly@embarqmail.com

Did you ever find the Japones in Florida? I've looked for them for years and every time we go back to mexico we bring some home. I'd love to find them here in the US.

www.driedfruitmall.com has 8 flavors available either by 1 lb or 5 lb orders, single flavors or mixed.

site used to be called Fuits Star.

stumbled back on to it when I did a search for these after I lost the site link and searched for "japanesepeanuts". Think the renamed site was the 3rd link on the google list.

I found them the other day at Walmart, in the checkout line, with all the other snacks from Mexico. I don't know if my local Walmart is unique in carrying these or if all Walmarts carry them, but you might check to see if your Walmart has them too.

Help! I cannot stop eating them. These are addictive, do not buy them.

Just returned from Cabo and I too thought they were a tpye but found out they are a style. Absolutely perfect in terms of texture and flavor - slighty sweet, slightly spicy, and little less salty. A wonderful snack.

We Japanese(actual Japanese)have similar snack.Peanut with shell, and shell tastes soy-sauce and a little sweet.Maybe Japanese maker copied recipe and changed a bit for Japanese taste.
If you come to Japan, try "Ebi-pea"or "Ika-pea".I love them. Can be found in convenient store.
