The Joys of Discovery

The other day the kids came running excitedly into the house to show me some unusual "critter".

The boy claimed to have seen some "legs" on it.

At first I thought it was just a bit of moss - but it did seem to curl up into a ball when we touched it.

Using a pair of wooden chopsticks - we prodded the little ball and if we looked super close we could see that it was some type of "critter"...maybe a grub or a tick or a ??? but it was all covered with a greenish mossy coat.

Whatever it was, it caused some excitement for about 10 minutes...

Most bugs are yucky except for the useful and cute Lady Bug!

I think I have found your answer to what this bug is. I was just outside in NJ, and I noticed a piece of moss/bark moving up the tree and upon further investigation realized it was a bug. I was doing research, and I came across this.... http://www.city-data.com/forum/garden/403039-need-another-insect-id-never-seen.html . The insect is called a Brown Lacewing Larva, and it is a bug that covers itself in moss/debris as camouflage, kind of like a decorator crab. I hope this solves your guys mystery, I know I was excited to find out what it was! :-)
